Photoshop: How to make selections with the magic wand...

Using the Magic Wand tool won't separate out a portion by itself (unless you don't plan on using layers). This is what I mean: If you have selected an area, and apply any adjustments (including using a paint brush, or a curves adjustment for example), only the selected area will be effected. This is nice, but as I keep saying, that will permanently alter the information of that area!
